Wednesday, October 31st, 2007Vindication
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007Yes, according to the world-wise and high-brow folks at Travel + Leisure magazine, Philadelphia is home to the least attractive people in America. Actually, Philadelphia ranked dead last amongst the 25 American cities for attractiveness in a poll of travelers. It’s all printed in the latest issue. Philadelphia also rated next to last in the stylishness of the people in the city, 23rd in safety and action/adventure getaway, 22nd or 21st in a place for a girlfriend’s getaway, cleanliness, athletic/active people, and a place for a romantic escape. The city also rated poorly in the worldliness of the people, a place to go to relax, access to the outdoors and the friendliness of the people. (Via here via buzzfeed via kottke.org)
I, for one, have never like Philly, it’s dirty, feels unsafe, is largely uninteresting after you’ve filed bast the Liberty Bell and through the halls of the Continental congress, perhaps with a stop in the room Jefferson drafted the Delaration of Indepedence. I was there 3 or 4 times for the Northeast Regional Oireachtas when my sister competed a lot and was in Ceilis 4 hands, 8 hands, etc. There was also the year my mom was in a 4 and an 8. I remember seeing an old black man in a basement mall 4 or 5 blocks from the hotel near a dunkin donuts sitting there with a handgun strapped to his belt. This was extremely frightening, I was probably 12 or 13 at the time. All I wanted was a decent bagel. Also, Philly is very close to New Jersey, in fact you can see it across the river and this is clearly unacceptable. The only time one should be able to see New Jersey is when you’re standing firmly on Manhattan or it’s moving past the outside of your car as quickly as possible, fading quickly into the rear view mirror as you get to where you’re going. There was also that time I bought a Creed CD in Philly, clearly it’s got a lot of negative associations.

today was awesome.
Tuesday, October 30th, 2007read a lot of a good novel. wrote some stuff that’s mostly worth something for an hour, I contemplated. I worked out some more plot for a story that’s been icking around in my head for years. I went to my classes, one of them got canceled and as a result we’ll have to get rid of a play I was looking forward to reading but I’ve arranged to study it along with another person in the class and discuss it with her and the professor, so that’s awesome. (who’s about to publish a new translation of it.) I ate soup. I made a pretty good vegetarian soup yesterday. that is all. gotta clean up in here and read and sleep in a little tomorrow.

pleasent in being unpleasent
Monday, October 29th, 2007Rending my desktop wholly unusable by tiling a 300×300 album cover over it’s surface is, somehow, nice. I don’t get it really but neither do you since you can’t see it and shouldn’t (i hope) care. Probably something to do with the contrast from the earlier mostly-solid colors background. I’ll probably change it in a while anyway.
In other news: Ziggy Stardust is like pulp sci-fi + guitar solos + drugs which equals awesome.
