well, whatever is going on there seemed to me to be a lot of strange tension in the scene, what with all the hoolpleheaded readnecks and the weird half retarded kid and the guy with the guitar who's way too into it...

I'm not arguing that the fact that they can simply be written down that they are literary, it's more that they have a lot in common with poetry, such as lyrical poetry, which is a sort of poetry sub genre. And to disqualify musical lyrics on the grounds you perhaps suggest would perhaps deny things like a single frame of film developed like a photograph from the province of art since you remove it from it's context in a way similar to how you're removing lyrics when you write them down. (surely a lot is lost but I'm not sure all of it's artful qualities are.)

This reminds me of something I recently read in film criticism (can't remember who wrote it)... the writer wondered why film studies were usually part of the English department, rather than the music department of colleges. (The argument went that film holds much more in common with music than it does language).

As for lyrics... I don't think that just because they can be written down they are necessarily 'literary'.

I can see doing that if you're pulling the door out to open it and the person is right behind you, because that way when you're puling open the door and you're sort of to the side of it you're out of the path of the door already so you may as well just let the other person go first, assuming the timing of their approach etc. that said, all of that goes out the window if the door is pushed open and you're inconveniencing everyone involved if you try to get the other person through first.

My dad is a zealous door-holder. But I think he goes too far: he holds it open for a person to enter in before he does, even though he got to the door first.

I can understand the need to get away from the internet while writing papers, but there are a few things I just couldn't do without on my computer: 1) the "Dictionary" application (also a thesaurus) bundled with os x—I use this thing constantly. Plus, a keyboard shortcut for a pop-up window to define any word that the cursor is over. And it's not too shabby (it uses the Oxford American Dictionary for definitions). 2) Formatting. I need to see the sentence/paragraph I'm writing—grammar, length, whatever—to decide if it fits. And it's much easier to see this on a word processor. 3) Editing. I am constantly moving around sentences and paragraphs, deleting and adding things, and generally making a mess of what I started with. (The idea is that eventually it turns out better).

I guess it really comes down to the fact that I like to edit things as I write. Usually I'll change my whole thesis halfway through the process.
